Zika Outbreak: CDC Advises Pregnant Women To Avoid Travel To Miami-Dade County

Email
While the concerns over the Zika virus have mainly focused on the health of pregnant women and their babies, new research from the journal Cell Stem Cell is finding evidence that suggests adult brain cells critical to learning and memory may be susceptible to the virus, according to the Washington Post. In a developing fetus the virus attacks neural progenitor cells which is what an early stage brain is filled with which then disrupts brain growth. These same cells are present in adults only far less but still significant to learning and memory. The researchers found the cells in adult brains are equally as vulnerable to the virus.
