Fraser McDonald, Broccoli Grower

Eastern Scotland has the ideal climate for growing broccoli, it’s neither too wet or too warm. At the family Farm near Arbroath the McDonalds have been growing for three generations. They produce a range of vegetables but their main crop is broccoli.

Young, glasshouse raised broccoli plants (or plugs) are planted out from early March till late July. Broccoli takes from two to four months to mature so the harvest usually runs from June till November. Like all horticulture much depends on the weather so harvest timings and volumes can vary from year to year.

The McDonald family are part of East Of Scotland Growers, a farmer owned cooperative based in Fife. The ESG is an EU accredited Producer Organisation which means they’ve achieved the highest possible standards of service, quality and innovation.
